A café sign is only the beginning
Follow 카페 to the door, then use 커피, 차, and 디저트 to make sense of the menu.
Understand the place
카페 identifies a café; 커피 means coffee. A shop can display either word on its outside sign. Inside, menu headings often organize drinks and food. 차 means tea in a drink-menu context, while 디저트 identifies desserts. 빵집 is a bakery, with bread as the main clue.
Easy to mix up
차 also has other meanings, including a vehicle. A cup, drink names, and a café menu help you choose the tea meaning. 빵집 and 카페 can offer overlapping products, so the sign is a useful starting point rather than a complete menu.
A sign you might see
A board reads 커피 · 차 · 디저트. Read it as three categories: coffee, tea, and dessert. You have identified what to look at next, but not the exact ingredients, price, or size. Those details belong to the individual menu item.
Read in this order
- Read the outside place word first. 카페 suggests a café; 빵집 suggests a bakery. Products may overlap, so keep looking.
- On a menu, identify the category before a specific item. 커피, 차, and 디저트 help you find the part you want.
- Use the surrounding words or pictures to resolve ambiguous words. Then check the individual item's details instead of treating the heading as a full description.
Three signs, three decisions
Fictional sign examples
카페 names the place and 커피 names a drink. A sign can contain both. Recognizing coffee is useful, but it does not specify whether a particular drink is hot, iced, sweetened, or available today.
On this fictional café menu, 차 and 디저트 label tea and desserts. The menu context gives 차 its tea meaning. A nearby drawing of a vehicle in a different setting could point you toward another meaning instead.
빵집 still names a bakery even when 휴무 says it is closed or taking a day off. Bread in the window is a place clue, while the status notice is the clue that changes whether you should try the door.
What the sign cannot tell you
Reading 차 as 'car' everywhere would make the café menu confusing. Reading it as 'tea' everywhere would also be a mistake. Begin with the setting and nearby words, then choose the meaning that fits. Familiar letters can carry different meanings.
Check your understanding
Show answer and explanation
커피 is coffee. 차 can mean tea in this setting; 빵집 is a bakery. Match the word to the drink you want, not simply to the building you are inside.
Show answer and explanation
Yes. The drink-menu context supports the tea meaning. This does not mean 차 always means tea: a different setting can support a different meaning.
Try it on your next walk
Find 카페, then choose a category you would order from. Say 커피 or 차 before revealing the translation. Listen again and notice how a familiar drink becomes a readable Korean word.
